Aligned choices support our flourishing and the flourishing of other people, nonhuman life, and the living systems that sustain us.
Misaligned choices undermine that flourishing, or expose it to foreseeable, unjustifiable risks of serious harm, even when harm does not ultimately occur.
In plain terms, we ask what a choice helps to grow and what it might damage. We look beyond immediate comfort, consider the wider effects and available alternatives, and remember that not every discomfort, accident, or risk is misalignment.
Our lives are already woven into the world. Through our attention and our choices, we shape something of the conditions in which we and others live. Alignment gives us a way to consider that participation: does it move us toward flourishing, or away from it?
The chapters that follow take that question further. We begin with discernment, learning to judge what a choice is likely to do, and repair, addressing harm and changing the pattern that caused it. From there we explore how we belong to Reality, our word for the whole of existence. We can follow them in order, or return to a theme that asks for more of our attention.
